‘Anne’s Bedroom’ Fairfax House’
Fairfax House in York is a fine example of an English Georgian townhouse. We are grateful to York Civic Trust for allowing us to reproduce as a small-scale wallpaper the beautiful ‘chinoiserie’ paper in Anne Fairfax’s bedroom. Documents in the archives show that between June 1762 and June 1763, the decorator Samuel Carpenter received the sums of £9.0s.0d. and £21.0s.0d. for his painting and decorating at Fairfax House and his invoices included the provision of ‘mock India paper’ for the ‘Miss’s Bedchamber at 1/3d. per yard.’ The term refers to block printed designs copying examples brought into the country by the East India Companies. The present paper at Fairfax House, with its peacock, peony and branch pattern, is similar to Anne’s own choice in 1762.
